Setting up a Guinea Pig Cage

December 1, 2015

Making sure your Guinea pig has a comfortable cage is one of the most important aspects of good Guinea pig care. If you’ve never had a Guinea pig, or cavy, before, you’ll want to do a bit of research before you go shopping. A Morehead City, NC veterinarian discusses setting up a cavy cage in this article.

Choosing The Cage

Guinea pigs are very active and playful, so make sure your pet has plenty of room to run and play. We recommend getting a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet for one cavy. For two, you’ll need even more room. You can get a wire cage, but choose one with a solid floor, as wire bottoms can hurt your pet’s tiny feet.

Substrate

Choosing the right substrate is very important! Avoid pine or cedar substrates, as these are toxic to small animals. You’ll also want to stay away from clay or clumping kitty litters. Aspen is a good option. You can also use fleece blankets.

Furnishings

Your tiny buddy will need food dishes. Ceramic ones are a good choice. You’ll also need a water bottle or dishes. Guinea pigs love to snuggle up in quiet spots, so be sure to give your tiny pet a cozy hidey-hole, such as a pet tent. Cavies can be potty-trained, so you may want to add a litterbox. A hayrack is optional, but helpful.

Toys!

Make sure to provide your furry pal with lots of fun toys. Guinea pigs need to chew, so be sure to provide plenty of chewable playthings. Items made of cardboard, paper, and safe woods can all make suitable cavy toys. Avoid giving your furball anything that he could choke on or get tangled up in. Stay away from things that have been coated with varnish, paint, or dye as well.

Location

Location is just as important for cavy real estate as for regular real estate. Don’t put your little buddy in direct sunlight, or in a very drafty area. You’ll also want to avoid putting your cavy in a very loud spot. Ideally, you’ll want to put your tiny pet in a spot where he can see, hear, and interact with you, but still feels safe.
