Frozen Doggy Treats

July 1, 2016

Summer is here! Many of us like to cool off on hot days by enjoy delicious summertime treats, like ice cream. Of course, treats are also one of Fido’s favorite things. Why not make your canine buddy some frozen treats of his own? A local Carteret County, NC vet lists some great summer snacks for Fido in this article.

Pupsicles

To make pupsicles, you’ll just need some doggy biscuits and sodium-free broth. Break off little pieces of the treats, put them in an ice cube tray, and add the broth. You can also use chew sticks, though you may want to freeze them in small paper cups instead.

Rolls

It doesn’t get much easier than this! Buy a roll of gourmet dog food or pre-cooked lamb, and put it in the freezer. Slice off and unwrap one piece at a time for instant tail wags.

Apple Treats

Slice some apples, and put them in ice cube trays. You can add cheese and/or bacon bits if you like. Then, just fill the tray with sodium-free chicken broth and freeze it.

Doggy Ice Cream

To make a doggy version of this classic summer snack, mix plain yogurt with peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, honey, wheat germ, or sodium-free broth. You can also include bits of cooked, shredded meat; veggies; fruit; cheese; bacon bits; and/or dog biscuits.

Cheeseburger Bites

Cook some hamburger meat, and then add water and shredded cheese. Freeze small portions in an ice cube tray, and hand them over to your canine pal when it’s really hot out. You can also use shredded chicken or turkey, or even fish. Just be sure the meat is cooked, unseasoned, and free of bones and skin.

Chicken Soup Snacks

Using an ice cube tray or wax paper cups, mix cooked, plain boneless chicken; peas; and carrots. Freeze them in small portions, and hand out one or two at a time.

Tips

When cooking for Fido, be careful to only use ingredients that are safe for your furry friend. Avoid dangerous foods, like garlic and onions; chives; scallions; nuts; avocados; pitted fruits; and currants, grapes, or raisins. Alcohol, caffeine, and products containing xylitol are also on the no-no list. Ask your vet for more information.
