Signs That Your Cat is Sick

January 15, 2021

Cats are very mysterious little furballs. They bite us out of affection, but then snub us when we want to cuddle. Most of Fluffy’s quirks are cute, but one in particular can be dangerous. Kitties often try to hide signs of illness, which can make it difficult to know when they are sick. A local Carteret County, NC vet lists some warning signs to look for in this article.

Withdrawal

Some of our feline pals are quite shy, and tend to hide a lot, just by nature. However, if your cat doesn’t want to leave her hiding spot, or just seems more withdrawn than usual, she could be sick.

Lack Of Appetite

Kitties can be finicky, but they should always be interested in dinner. If Fluffy is ignoring what’s in her bowl but meowing at you for something else, she may just not like her supper. A cat that just doesn’t want to eat, however, could be sick.

Poor Fur Condition

Fluffy is usually very good about keeping her pretty fur nice and clean. However, if your furry little pal doesn’t feel well, she may not go through with her usual routine. If she neglects her coat, it will soon start looking matted, dull, or greasy.

Uncharacteristic Behavior

Anything that is out of the ordinary for your cat could be a sign that something is wrong. This includes things like cuddly cats suddenly hissing when touched, or quiet kitties becoming very vocal.

Vomiting

It’s not uncommon for cats to have hairballs. However, if your furry friend is throwing up frequently or violently, or is dry heaving, contact your vet.

Litterbox Problems

Any changes in the color, amount, texture, or odor of Fluffy’s waste could be a sign that there is something going on with her. Straining to go is also a red flag, as is diarrhea.

Respiratory Issues

Fluffy should breathe quietly and easily, at least when she isn’t meowing about something. Gasping, coughing, wheezing, and rasping are all indications that something is wrong.

Fever

Fever is just as concerning in cats as it is with people. Cats usually run a bit warmer than we do, but if Fluffy feels dangerously hot, contact your vet.
